H-town Golfer

Yesterday I played my first round of golf in seven years--it was a scramble format tournament to raise money for our parish school. And I hadn't really practiced, either--just a couple of trips to the driving range last week to see if I could still hit the ball. Let's just say that a lot of rust builds up after seven years, and when you don't really work on your upper body, you lose some distance.

But in spite of my complete lack of recent experience, and the fact that my clubs were all playing at least 20 yards shorter than they used to, I played ok. Not great by any stretch, and I was wildly inconsistent, but I did hit some good shots. My scramble group used far more of my shots than I thought they would, including two birdie putts on the front nine and my tee shot on 12 (a par five--I absolutely blasted my driver). And, I managed to win the closest to the pin contest on 7 which netted me a gift certificate to play another round at Memorial Park. Guess I might have to find a little time to hit the links occasionally.

My workout this morning was less successful, though. The schedule had 4 x 1000 in 3:50 with 600 m recovery. I only got through 3 reps, though, and I just didn't have the fourth one, so I salvaged it with a quick 200m recovery after the third and a 400in 91. Hopefully that'll leave me with something in the tank for the Ten for Texas on Saturday.

Hopefully this front will bring us some cooler weather for the weekend, and not just a lot of rain...

Ah golf. Yes I used to do that. Maybe we should have a golf 4 miler where the fastest one to finish wins. Just watch out for the flying golf balls.

Sounds like the golf was fun - but us runners spend so much time pursuing our primary obsession that it would be tough to take on a second one...
